Annual Impact Report

Annual Impact Report

July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025 Fiscal Year

Keshet’s Annual Impact Reports highlight the impact that YOU, our community, make through supporting Keshet; from our work at the intersection of arts and justice to supporting artists from across the world to accessible and affordable dance education in Albuquerque. Thank you!

Letter from the Director

Dear friends of Keshet,

Thanks to your support, Keshet Dance Company & Center for the Arts expanded its impact locally and strengthened connections nationally this fiscal year (July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025). Through creative partnerships, national and local funding, and community support, we saw growth in our programming this year, as we approached our 30th anniversary.

Whether you made a financial contribution or donated your time as a volunteer, joined us for a performance, or danced with us in class, you are a part of Keshet’s creative community and your support means the world to us. You not only invested in our vision to continue offering a welcoming home for the intersection of the arts, artists, and audiences here in Albuquerque, but also supported visiting artists from around the world seeking opportunities to collaborate and develop their own unique works through the Keshet Ideas & Innovation Community (KIIC). The impact of your investment was also felt behind the walls of New Mexico juvenile prisons where dancers taking part in M3 (Movement + Mentorship = Metamorphosis) continued connecting with opportunities for personal growth through dance education, and post-release dance and volunteer opportunities at Keshet Center for the Arts. Additionally, your investment this year was life-changing for our professional company of dancers, representing only a handful of full-time paid professional contemporary dance companies in the United States, and two dozen young dancers taking part in Keshet’s Pre-Professional Program (KP3) who received inclusive training and mentorship giving them the physical and emotional tools to excel in their pursuit of a career in dance.

Our successes within the arts and mentorship space in New Mexico and the dance economy nationally is a direct reflection of the power of community investment. We are so proud to present the stories of growth, impact, celebrations, and reflections on everything you made possible this year and showcased within this Impact Report. We hope you enjoy looking back on this amazing year through this Report as much as we did preparing it and that you feel inspired to continue dancing with us next year, as we celebrate our 30th anniversary, and beyond.

Thank you for being a part of Keshet’s creative community!

With gratitude,

Keshet Dance Company

This year celebrated the 29th performance season of Keshet Dance Company and the premiere of a new mixed repertory work entitled A More Beautiful Question. Inspired by and exploring the theme of inquiry, eight artists were invited to consider their own unique perspectives and life experiences to design, choreograph, and perform original pieces exploring the theme. These works explored how the more beautiful questions guide us to investigate more genuine problems and allow us to activate the most creative, meaningful solutions in life.

“…the dancers seem to remind us that, no matter how hard the questions might be, we don’t have to grapple with them alone. The evening ends on a note of reveling in the human condition and curiosity.”

Ideas & Innovation Community

Each year, Keshet Company Dancers and our local creative community connect with visiting artists and arts institutions around the world to share best practices, exchange ideas, and collaborate through the Keshet Ideas and Innovations Community (KIIC).

In FY24-25, Keshet saw 22 visiting artists from 12 cities, 7 states, and two countries (including the USA)!

Makers Space Experience

One of the core aspects of KIIC’s work to contribute to and support the global arts economy is the Makers Space Experience (MSE) hosted at Keshet Center for the Arts annually.

This year, Keshet received more than fifty applications from artists in eight different countries and selected twelve to visit New Mexico and take part in the ten-day cohort-based residency. Two cohorts of Makers were welcomed in January and February and engaged with Keshet Company Dancers, faculty, and community members as they developed their unique projects and had the opportunity to present finished and in-progress works during the Choreographers’ Showcases held at the end of each cohort period.

Makers from the Makers Space Experience in class, performance, and out in the New Mexico landscape!

Throughout their time at Keshet, Makers had access to performance and practice spaces and took part in several workshops designed to support arts entrepreneurship and business training. Movement classes led by Makers sharing their unique styles were offered during the Experience and Keshet opened all Makers Space arts business workshops and movement classes to the public. This year’s cohorts of Makers appreciated having the opportunity to connect with our community and each other, sharing aspects of their culture and practice while exchanging ideas and learning together. The Choreographers’ Showcase even included one impromptu collaboration between several cohort members who plan to continue their collaboration beyond the Makers Space Experience!

Hear Here Festival

This February, Keshet hosted the 4th annual Hear Here Festival, celebrating the ways in which collaboration fuels innovation in the arts. Hear Here pairs a composer/scoremaker with a choreographer to design and rehearse a new original piece over the course of two weeks and perform it as part of the festival showcase. Collaborators, working together for the first time, were given access to Keshet studios and performance spaces as well as a working stipend to make their artistic visions a reality.

Performers in the 2025 Hear Here Festival

Excerpts from the 2025 Hear Here Festival:

The works created during the 2025 Hear Here Festival celebrate and honor the collaborative spirit of our arts community and led to the creation of a new full-length piece choreographed by Keshet Company Dancer Ana Lopes Aréchiga and scored by local composer Zachariah Julian, which will see its formal development and premiere as part of Keshet’s upcoming 2025-2026 performance season.

Presenting Voices Series

In continued partnership with the National Center for Choreography Akron (NCCAkron), Keshet’s Presenting Voices Series brought our first-ever tech residency welcoming Body Watani Dance to support the development of their project After the Last Red Sky. Over the week-long residency facilitated by Keshet staff, artists got 60+ hours of hands-on experience in Keshet’s performance spaces working with sound and lighting, stage design, and other technical elements of stage production to help bring their vision to life. Body Watani developed immersive soundscapes, mocked up several set special effects including a disappearing mirror wall and a falling moon, and identified the lighting techniques that best fit their needs as they prepared to take After the Last Red Sky to its premiering venue.

After the tech residency, members of Keshet Dance Company traveled to Nashville for NCCAkron’s Creative Administration Research conference (CAR). The CAR program supports U.S. dance artists and challenges the field to think beyond the boundaries of known, traditional models and “best practices.” Shira Greenberg and Ana Lopes Aréchiga presented “The Choreography of Community and Resources,” sharing insights on Keshet’s approach to meet the needs of our community while offering the impactful dance education and mentorship that has established Keshet as an asset to our creative economy.

KIIC Funding

Keshet is grateful to the many funders who have invested in this important programming, championing the value of the arts, the artists, and the arts economy, and the intersection of arts practice and difficult conversations about critical contemporary issues.

We acknowledge the City of Albuquerque, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund, New Mexico Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Generally surprised about the amount of interest and connectivity there is at Keshet. A lot of community members and students pass through there.”

“This was more than what I hoped for in the Keshet residency. In addition the business classes generated a lot of momentum, knowledge and context for future creative endeavors.”

Arts & Justice Initiatives

This fiscal year, Keshet’s Arts and Justice Initiatives continued its vital mission of bringing the transformative power of dance to incarcerated and paroling youth across New Mexico. Through movement, creativity, and connection, the program provided a critical platform for self-expression and personal growth.

“[Class is like] being at the top of a mountain and looking at all the beautiful things.”

M3 Student

Movement + Mentorship = Metamorphosis (M3)

Keshet partnered with the New Mexico Children, Youth, & Families Department (CYFD) and Bernalillo County to offer comprehensive dance programming in three juvenile justice facilities—reaching both pre- and post-adjudicated youth through Keshet’s M3 (Movement + Mentorship = Metamorphosis) Program.

Participants explored a range of dance genres, including Contemporary, Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop & Breakdancing, Improvisation, and Choreography—each designed not only to build technical skills but also to nurture confidence, discipline, and collaborative spirit. Each class became a space of empowerment—where youth amplified their voices, their stories, and their opportunities through dance.

This year, Keshet reignited programming offering participants opportunities for post release, supervised release, and individuals on probation the ability to work within the community and continue their Keshet dance education and mentorship relationships.

Keshet’s Arts and Justice team remains deeply committed to the belief that access to the arts is a transformative experience, and that the creative process can be a powerful agent for personal and social transformation.

Movement for Mercy

In the summer of 2024, Keshet welcomed Dr. Amir Whitaker and Mya Edwards of Project Knucklehead for an intensive weekend of connection, discovery, play, and learning. Project Knucklehead is collaborating with Keshet Dance Company for the 2025 iteration of Movement for Mercy and performing as part of the Movement for Mercy cast. After several full days of work in the studio, the intensive rehearsal period culminated with two public events, including a sneak peek at one of the pieces from Movement for Mercy (pictured). Those who were able to attend were privy to deep conversations about the nature of the work, opportunities to talk to the dancers directly about their process, and a deeply moving and profound special performance.

Keshet Dance Company and Arts and Justice collaborating artists also premiered two new Movement for Mercy pieces to audiences at our Albuquerque Wine Classic interim event on March 1. The two pieces featured works by student collaborators at the John Paul Taylor Center in Las Cruces. Keshet’s Arts and Justice teaching faculty members worked with students on developing their choreographic concepts into fully realized pieces.

Movement for Mercy will preview for Albuquerque audiences in Fall 2025 before premiering in Los Angeles November 15 at the Odyssey Theater!

Arts Education, Health & Resiliency Research Convening

In November 2024, Keshet brought together fantastic core arts partners (Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Carnegie Hall, Arts for Healing and Justice Network), research partners (University of Florida Arts in Medicine, World Health Organization, White House Arts & Health), and funding partners (Wallace Foundation, David Rockefeller Fund, New England Foundation for the Arts) for three jam packed days filled with beautiful discussions and possibilities in the Arts Education, Health & Resiliency Research Convening!

Participants of the Convening

Designed as a collaborative exploration, this convening brought together these key arts and health researchers, practitioners, funders, and stakeholders invested in the lasting impacts of arts- and education-based programming, inviting them to observe and contribute as essential thought partners. Focusing on three core elements—cultivating authentic relationships, strengthening organizational culture, and centering arts practices—the participants aimed to define and articulate these qualities, creating targeted resources to support best practices across the field.

Keshet is excited to continue exploring these partnerships and conversations.

AJI Funding

Keshet is grateful to the many funders who have invested in this important programming, supporting the impact of the arts on the juvenile justice system and the value of community conversation and connection.

We acknowledge the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mellon Foundation, the Coalition for Juvenile Justice and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc,  United Way of North Central New Mexico, Aerie Real Foundation, Sandia Foundation, the Hancock Family Foundation, and the Sheila Fortune Foundation.

Education & Engagement

This year, Keshet’s community dance classes continued to grow, with a 14% increase in enrollment from last year. It was so much fun to see all of the new faces in our studios! Our new and returning dancers welcomed family and friends to see them perform in two community concerts held in the winter and spring. Our community concert series featured dancers of all ages and abilities performing in a range of styles and techniques such as Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, and more. Our 4-8 year old dancers known as “Kiwis” drew big crowds, and for many of these dancers it was their first time performing on the Keshet stage. Bringing together professional, pre-professional, and community dancers for the 2025 Community Spring Concert, Keshet Dance Company joined in on the fun with the world premiere of Protect the Dolls, choreographed by Keshet Company Dancer Elysia Pope.

KP3

Keshet’s pre-professional program (KP3) embarked on deep work in dance technique, dance history, and mentorship this year. Including opportunities for performance with community and Company members, as well as research, dance viewing, and dance classes with visiting artists, KP3 students expanded their knowledge and personal connections with the broader field of dance while also deepening their connection with the Keshet community.

KP3 students expanded their knowledge of the broader field of dance through research projects, dance viewing, and dance classes with visiting artists, while also deepening their connection with the Keshet community through performance opportunities with Company and community members.

Ailey II
In Spring 2025, the KP3 class attended the school showing of Ailey II at Popejoy Hall where they experienced the stirring Revelations for the first time. Seeing Revelations, a world-famous piece often considered Alvin Ailey’s best work, was especially impactful for the dancers as they had been learning about Alvin Ailey prior to the performance. The KP3 class had recently reviewed some of his rehearsal notes, watched clips from a documentary about his life, and watched some of his choreography as part of a study on his life and work. After the performance, KP3’s most advanced students were selected to take a Master Class with Ailey II’s rehearsal director, Shay Bland. This was incredibly inspiring to our students, particularly to two students who went on to attend Alvin Ailey’s Professional Division Summer Program and Alvin Ailey’s Junior Division Summer Program this year. Many students were moved to tears by the performance, and everyone raved about how good the experience was.

Dance Island Workshop Project
This year, the KP3 students also took part in a multi-day workshop exploring the history of dance education and reimagining their own dance world. Keshet Faculty Members Sarah Gonzales, Lara Segura, and Laura Orozco Garrett hosted a series of presentations about the historical context of being a dance student (who had access to dance, who did not, where students learn dance, etc.) and the reality of being a dance student today (who still does and does not have access to dance). Student dancers concluded the workshop with a group project creating their own “Dance Islands.” The groups were asked to include in their designs a list of core values, the styles taught, and determine a dance “climate” of their island. It was incredible to see all the information the students added beyond what was asked. Each group included accessibility as a core value including affordable training, free transportation, free dance equipment, and other accommodations to ensure that everyone on their islands would be able to dance together.

XVIII Echoes
Keshet’s Pre-Professional Program had a fantastic year of learning and performances. KP3 held their annual Spring Concert, titled XVIII Echoes, performing in 16 different pieces in the styles of Ballet, Contemporary, and Jazz, as well as presenting their work from Improv/Comp classes and Variations from Ballet Variations classes.

Two of the pieces presented were choreographed by our graduating seniors. It was their first time choreographing on their peers for both students. We are so proud to welcome one of our graduating dancers as Keshet faculty and Company Dancer Apprentice, and send our fondest farewell to the other graduating student as they go on to study as a trainee at Kansas City Ballet. Some stand out performances during the concert were a gorgeous Contemporary piece, Rising Tides, choreographed by Company Dancer Sonia Bologa on the KP3 student upper levels, and an upbeat jazz piece about coffee, Coffee To Go, choreographed by Laura Orozco Garrett featuring our younger dancers!

Little Dancer Big Dancer Mentorship Breakfast

Each spring, KP3 students lead a fun-filled day of dance mentorship and discovery known as the Little Dancer Big Dancer Mentorship Breakfast. Held in March this year, Keshet welcomed dozens of new dancers aged two and up and their families to take fun-filled classes assisted by KP3 students giving them a taste of the Keshet experience. Dancers and their families were treated to breakfast and refreshments throughout the day very generously donated by community partners Rudy’s BBQ and Country Store, Whole Foods, Costco, and Red Rock Roasters. Classes offered during Little Dancer Big Dancer were completely free to join and all donations raised during the event supported Keshet’s non-competitive dance scholarship fund allowing Keshet to offer all class fees and performance tickets on a zero dollar sliding scale year round.

Education Funding

Keshet is grateful to the many funders who have invested in dance education and performance, helping Keshet to continue broadening community accessibility to experience the transformative art of dance.

We acknowledge New Mexico Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division, Albuquerque Community Foundation, PNM Resources Foundation, Aerie Real Foundation, and the City of Albuquerque and CABQ Department of Art and Culture.

KP3 classes have taught me to be more responsible and helped me be more aware of my body. The core value “Inclusion” really speaks to me. I love how Keshet gives everyone a chance no matter where they come from.

KP3 Student

Keshet has opened up so many opportunities in dance and even outside of dance. Keshet has shown me and my peers what dance is like in the real world and how to manage our dance lives, real lives, and our health without getting overloaded.

Keshet Center for the Arts

Keshet’s exciting, multi-phase renovation project moved forward this fiscal year, with continued design and development work, as well as continued fundraising to support this large-scale project. Supported by lead funding of $1.2 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, funding from the State of New Mexico was added to the project, along with several other private individual donors and foundations, including contributors to our Renovation Campaign, showing community support for the project! The incredible design team of Dreskin Architecture and Innovation, led by the amazing Jeremy Dreskin, was joined by the fantastic design-build firm Energy Systems Group to help move our project forward into the coming fiscal year!

Volunteers

Keshet’s incredible volunteer community has shown up this year in a variety of ways to engage with Keshet — from landscaping and front desk support to cleaning, reorganizing, painting, and in-kind donations—we couldn’t be more grateful for all you do for Keshet! As we look forward to renovations to our space, your help and support not only make it possible for us to continue our work, but to also build community and cultivate some truly beautiful friendships. To all of our community volunteers, KP3 families, and volunteer groups – THANK YOU!

Keshet Staff and Volunteers

“I’ve been volunteering with Keshet for years now: some in official capacity as a board member, others as a parent, and more simply as a member of the community. Keshet is family (both literally and figuratively). I believe in the work they do; I support the communities they build; and I am inspired by the lives they touch. Meeting other like minded individuals and working towards a common good always keeps me coming back. When you support others, then discover that others will be there to support you, coming back means making an impact, no matter how small the task.”

Keshet Volunteer

“Volunteering for Keshet is always an uplifting experience. I am aware of being in a community of people showing [up] to be part of something good and important. The teamwork and collaborative leadership makes it easy to join in.

In these uncertain and changing times, involvement at Keshet keeps me hopeful, and motivated to keep showing up in the world, and grow as a human being.”

Funding Partner Highlights

This year, the US Small Business Administration awarded funding to Keshet through a congressionally directed appropriation  to support the Keshet Ideas & Innovation Community (KIIC) which champions the value of the artist and the arts economy through a range of residency programs, makerspace resources, and professional development training. With support from the SBA , KIIC offered technical assistance in funding strategies, marketing, and industry best practices for small businesses and arts entrepreneurs working in the creative industries. In coordination with the Makers Space Experience, these workshops brought together local and visiting artists with industry experts to learn and grow their businesses together with much needed technical support in the arts. KIIC programming continues to support the expansion of small businesses in the arts, job creation, and small business growth and sustainability through the US Small Business Administration’s investment.

The Coalition for Juvenile Justice supported Movement for Mercy (MfM) with an impactful grant to support artists from both sides of prison walls collaborating to develop and perform original works examining, questioning, and re-imagining the US juvenile justice system. This grant was particularly meaningful as it supported a new MfM work, as part of the Youth Justice Action Month in America, honoring the 50th anniversary of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) and the creation of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). Keshet welcomed esteemed partners from Project Knucklehead to begin the creative process then worked with students in Keshet’s M3 program to support the development of new choreography. One original section from MfM was performed in 2024 during a sneak peak event and a preview of the full production is planned for Fall 2025 followed by a touring premiere in Los Angeles, supported by a National Dance Project grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts.

The State of New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) recognized the importance of Keshet’s arts education and mentorship in reducing violence in our community with an impactful contract through its Violence Intervention Program. This funding supported our work with longtime collaborator, Maggie Bergeron, to evaluate ways Keshet programming creates spaces of belonging and community connectivity, including evaluation tools and professional development to support Keshet faculty to continue developing curriculum and practices that support young dancers’ feelings of safety, connection, and belonging within the artistic space. Keshet is very honored to have been selected to be a partner in this important project serving our youth and community.

ABQ Wine Classic

Wine aficionados from New Mexico and beyond gathered this summer for Keshet’s major fundraising event, the fourth annual ABQ Wine Classic. Wine and arts lovers came together over four days to enjoy a stellar selection of wines provided by this year’s honorary wine chair, Robert Sinskey Vineyards & Wilding Farm and selections curated by the visionaries of the Wine Classic Wine Committee. The annual event raises money for Keshet’s Youth Arts Initiatives.

ABQ Wine Classic partner and sponsor Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm hosted the opening night dinner and the Sinskey Vineyards afternoon Wine Seminar in the exquisite La Quinta Ball Room and Grand Portal. Event sponsors Alberto Gutierrez and Pia and Jesus Salazar opened their breathtaking homes to host the Champagne BYOB Gala Dinner and the Backyard Poolside Afterparty where KP3 students had the honor of performing new and in-progress pieces exclusively for Wine Classic guests.

Ex Novo Brewing’s newest location in the heart of downtown Albuquerque provided the perfect backdrop for the exciting and spirited live auction gala dinner at the heart of the Wine Classic weekend.

New venues, new event partners, and a creative community energized to help more Albuquerque kids access the arts and helped Keshet host the most successful ABQ Wine Classic since its launch in 2021, netting approximately $150,000!

Thank you to everyone who raised a glass with us this year–we look forward to going even bigger for number five next year!

I am inspired by organizations that are authentically engaged with community and with creativity and craft. Keshet and its people always do just that and that is why I remain a supporter of their work. Thank you for all you do, Keshet.”
