Drop-In Adult Class Styles & Descriptions

Ballet

Students will train rigorously, learning plié, battement tendu, battement degagé, rond de jambe à terre, battement frappé, adagio, grand battement combinations, and performing développés and grand battements in proper alignment. In the center, students use ballet body positions to perform battement tendu and complicated adagio combinations. Allegro work will challenge students with basic petit and grand allegro combinations. Across the floor, students will learn ballet locomotion, port de bras, allegro steps, pirouette combinations with consecutive turns

Contemporary

Contemporary Dance embraces many dance styles and techniques. Contemporary classes at Keshet include in-depth examination of the fundamentals of contemporary, Graham technique, release technique, weight shifting, floor work, dynamic shifts in quality of movement and musicality, and experimenting with choreography. Classes are structured by a center warmup and floorwork, followed by technique exercises and traveling exercises. Dancers will be pushed to explore their physical limitations while searching for joy in their own movement.

Improvisational Contemporary

We explore contemporary dance technique and styles using structured improvisation, guided movement exercises, and choreographed material. We’ll find out how our bodies move and work – and try to have some fun along the way! This class is great for both beginners and those with more dance experience.

Jazz

Jazz includes the basics of Jazz dance technique. Students will learn basic steps, stretching, isolation, and how to explore characters and expressions through movement. Jazz at Keshet has a focus on rhythm and improving flexibility. This is a great class for any student interested in Musical Theater, exciting dancing, or learning how to express themselves through movement.

Contact Improvisation

Contact Improvisation is an exploration of the kinesthetic possibilities of bodies moving through contact, where participants learn to discover and develop agency with their own sense of risk and safety, trust and boundary; rather than depending on outside authorities telling them how, where, and when to move. Sometimes wild and athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative, it is a form open to all bodies and enquiring minds. It is a dance of intimacy (physical closeness) and expression that involves exploration of the fundamentals of sharing weight, consent, touch, being kinetically aware, and following a shared, rolling point of contact between partners. All levels of experience are welcome!
