Keshet’s Arts and Justice Initiatives Creative Team (AJCT) presents Diverting from Detention: Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline
A Conversation for Educators and Education Advocates
The Keshet Arts & Justice Creative Team (AJCT) presents their latest Community Conversation, Diverting from Detention: Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline. This conversation, led by dynamic youth leaders, focuses on understanding the intricate web of the School-to-Prison Pipeline. Examining the ripple effect of decisions made in the school systems leading to the juvenile prison ecosystem and offering opportunities for solutions at both the classroom and systems levels.
The Keshet AJCT is comprised of Keshet staff (artists, educators, and justice-system reform advocates with lived experience) who are dedicated to analyzing detrimental disciplinary practices and engaging in proactive community solutions. They work to engage stakeholders in collaborative community change while centering the arts as a tool for healing and continued education and engagement.
The primary goal of this upcoming event is to engage the community in discussion and equip educators with resources and classroom techniques as alternatives to punitive practices, steering students away from the dangerous funnel of the school-to-prison pipeline.
Emani Brooks, Arts & Justice Creative Team Member, says of the importance of these types of community conversations: “Originally I began this work in 2019 after experiencing my own situation with being funneled through the school-to-prison pipeline. But as I like to say, I am an exception not the rule. It took just one person to believe in me to break through the stereotypes that have been put in place for someone like myself. As a result of that experience, I became motivated to learn about this dysfunctional system and how I could be an asset in dismantling it by providing youth and educators with knowledge and tools to create a safer and healthier environment so youth can learn, prosper, and grow.“
This initiative not only examines history but actively helps to shape the future, centering a narrative of resilience, education, justice, and community collaboration.
Join us as we embark on a journey of change, one community conversation at a time.
