Keshet Dance & Center for the Arts presents Everett Company: Bliss Body and Parables from Prison

Keshet Dance and Center for the Arts is pleased to welcome Everett Company (Providence, RI) to Albuquerque! Bringing two new productions to Albuquerque audiences for their New Mexico premieres, these presentations by Everett are made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mellon Foundation. Both productions are rooted at the intersection of dance and social justice, connecting audiences to deeply personal stories, investigating our society, the Black experience, and the juvenile justice ecosystem, through the powerful vehicles of dance and storytelling.

Bliss Body collages dance, imagery and true stories, to explore and share experiences of bliss. The piece is a provocative and moving hour of dance and theater incorporating quiet meditation and energetic dancing, that considers peace and struggle, and asks how we find bliss in today’s world. It is an invitation to be present, to let go, join in and feel bliss!

“Everett Company’s ‘Bliss Body’ uses personal stories to explore bliss, Black experience. An interactive, multidisciplinary performance featuring dance, rap, poetry and more, “Bliss Body” invited audience members to contemplate the idea of bliss through the lens of Black experiences in America, telling the personal stories of four performers.” – Sofia Barnett, The Brown Daily Herald

Everett also brings Prince Nwankwo and his new curriculum Parables from Prison to New Mexico audiences. Parables from Prison is a collection of transformative stories that incarcerated youth recognize as some of the milestones they face navigating the prison system and searching for their place in a punishing society. These parables as told by Prince Nwankwo and recorded by Everett have resulted in a series of short films that can be used directly with youth to help them process and understand their experiences. The series comprises six short film parables.
