annual report
FY23-24 Annual Report
Letter from the Director
Dear friends of Keshet,
Together, with your support and championship, Keshet Dance Company & Center for the Arts increased our national recognition, funding, and connectivity this fiscal year (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024). This Annual Report demonstrates how your investment in the power of dance is impacting Albuquerque’s creative economy, New Mexico’s juvenile justice system, and the national dance field.
Bringing 33 residency artists from around the country and the world, the Keshet
Ideas & Innovation Community (KIIC) had our most geographically diverse year yet, and increased opportunities for Albuquerque artists and Keshet students to engage in creative exchange with national and international artists. Keshet Dance Company and Movement for Mercy is being brought to the national stage with support from New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project. And with a grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, we’re getting ready to break ground on Keshet Center for the Arts renovations in the coming months!
This year, with a transformative gift from MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving Open Call, we are planning for Keshet’s future and look forward to what the years ahead will bring with and for you, our creative community. Thank you for joining us as a donor, volunteer, partner, student, performer, choreographer, dancer, arts enthusiast, social justice advocate, believer in the transformative power of the arts!
With gratitude,
Shira Greenberg
Keshet Founder and Artistic Director
National Recognition
This year, Keshet received pivotal support from national funders that acknowledges and furthers the meaningful impact access to dance and Keshet’s work have had on our communities and our world. In March, Keshet was awarded a $2M grant through MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving Open Call, working with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States. Yield Giving launched an Open Call for community-led, community-focused organizations whose explicit purpose is to enable individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being through foundational resources. Keshet is honored to be among this group of awardees, incredible organizations across the country impacted by the 2024 Yield Award. This transformative funding will support Keshet’s sustainability efforts, bringing dance to those who would not otherwise have access for many years into the future.
New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project awarded a grant to support Keshet Dance Company to develop and tour the next iteration of Movement for Mercy. National Dance Project is widely recognized as one of the country’s major sources of funding and field building for dance. We’re honored to have the artistic value and community impact of Movement for Mercy uplifted with this award. Movement for Mercy is a unique contemporary dance performance that re-imagines the United States juvenile justice systems, co-created by artists both inside and outside prison walls. Keshet Dance Company has already begun the Movement for Mercy rehearsal process, including collaborating with visiting artists and inviting community for a sneak peek behind the scenes.

Keshet Dance Company
The heart of our organization is Keshet Dance Company, a core group of professional dance artists, who creatively feed and are fed by three intersecting program areas: Education & Engagement, Ideas & Innovation Community, and Arts & Justice Initiatives. Inspired by our experience within these program areas, Company works often reflect these experiences and this embodied knowledge. This year featured the development and presentation of new Company works with many collaborators and influences from different aspects of Keshet programming.
Movement for Mercy
In June 2024, Keshet Dance Company welcomed dynamic collaborators from Los Angeles in partnership with the Arts for Healing and Justice Network and Project Knucklehead: Dr. Amir Whitaker aka “Dr. Knucklehead” and Mya Edwards. The collaborative team came together for a 5-day Movement for Mercy intensive rehearsal process. Movement for Mercy, co-created by collaborating artists inside and outside of prison walls, is in its 4th iteration.
Through creative exploration and conversation about the collaborative’s hopes for the future of re-imagined justice systems, the creative team worked to kick off Movement for Mercy choreography development. The team used research on juvenile solitary confinement laws to ignite the creative process, ultimately creating a 20 minute segment of movement and poetry to showcase the inhumane conditions and detrimental impacts of solitary confinement.
This latest iteration of Movement for Mercy is slated to premiere in March 2025, with preview performances in Albuquerque, a formal premiere in Los Angeles, and subsequent touring across the United States, supported by New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project.

National Water Dance
Keshet Dance Company traditionally participates in the Biennial National Water Dance, a nationwide initiative dedicated to raising awareness about water conservation and environmental justice, and joined again in April 2024 . With support from the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division’s Outdoor Equity Fund, the Company performed live at the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, coinciding with other dancers from across the nation performing simultaneously.
Audience members were immersed in a multidisciplinary, interactive journey titled Moving Forward Together, curated by Anastasia Knodle (Diné- The Navajo Nation, and one of her known clans: Todích’íí’nii which translates to Bitter Water), Keshet Arts and Justice Creative Team Member, and Lara Segura, Keshet Company Dancer and DEI-ABJ Coordinator (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, Belonging, and Justice)
The performance shared the story of the Navajo Twin Warriors and shed light on the critical issue of water rights in the Southwest, particularly in light of the June 2023, Arizona v. Navajo Nation, Supreme Court denial of water rights outlined in US treaties with the Navajo (Diné) Nation. As the story unfolded with dance, movement, visual art, poetry, song, and spoken word, attendees were invited to question what modern day monsters we face in regard to territorial access to water and the impacts of climate change on this region. Approximately 120 audience members came together as a united community of warriors to honor water as both a sacred and essential resource for human survival.

Anemoia
We kicked off this year’s season with a new, original production, Anemoia, choreographed by members of the Keshet Dance Company and Artistic Director Shira Greenberg, and including Keshet’s Pre-Professional Students and a multigenerational mix of dancers and movers from the Albuquerque community.
This work was inspired by artists of all ages who have never met (but have exchanged ideas and concepts virtually), exploring places they have never traveled, and embodying movement from across borders where they have never been.
With a diverse ensemble of over 40 dancers, including some who were taking their first steps onto the stage, Anemoia embodied Keshet’s spirit of community, and the belief that the art and joy of dance is for everyone.

KDC Funding
Keshet is grateful to the many funders who have invested in these projects and performances, , promoting the value of the intersection of arts practice with community conversations about critical contemporary issues.
We acknowledge the New England Foundation for the Arts and the National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Mellon Foundation and the Doris Duke Charitable Fund, New Mexico Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and New Mexico Outdoor & Recreation Division.
Ideas & Innovation
It was the biggest year yet for the Keshet Ideas & Innovation Community (KIIC)! We spent the year investing in our creative economy and local arts community, bringing together emerging and established professional artists into a space of collaboration and learning and providing artists with makerspace, funding, deep dive business resources, and a direct line to powerful conversations and connections with our vibrant New Mexico community.
With the launch of the new Presenting Voices series, the revival of the Hear Here Festival, and another year of the Makers Space Experience, KIIC brought the most residency artists ever (33!) with the most geographically diverse representation.
Presenting Voices Series
Keshet’s Presenting Voices Series engages artists in longer-term, durational residency periods with opportunities for multiple return visits from a single artist or company, to nurture deep and meaningful relationships with the New Mexico community. This year, the Presenting Voices Series focused on artists who intentionally explore the topics of systemic racism and carceral systems through the lens of dance and embodied arts practices.
In January, we welcomed Everett Company (Providence, RI) bringing two new productions to Albuquerque audiences for their New Mexico premieres. Bliss Body and Parables from Prison are rooted at the intersection of dance and social justice, connecting audiences to deeply personal stories, investigating our society, the Black experience, and the juvenile justice ecosystem, through the powerful vehicles of dance and storytelling. Photos courtesy of Everett
In addition to sharing their performances at Keshet Center for the Arts, Everett’s team of teaching artists joined Keshet’s M3 faculty for classes at the Youth Diagnostic and Development Center (YDDC), Albuquerque’s juvenile detention facility. Everett Company engaged M3 students with workshops on comedy improvisation, poetry writing, and discussion on the intersection of performing arts and social justice.
In April, Helanius J. Wilkins (Boulder, CO) made his third visit to New Mexico and Keshet with his project: The Conversation Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging, conceived by Helanius J. Wilkins. This project is an ongoing multi-year, multimedia dance and social justice work. It confronts and celebrates heritage, resiliency, justice, and hope across all 50 U.S. States/D.C./inhabited territories. Building on a Belonging Conversation he facilitated with Keshet’s pre-professional students in November, Wilkins set a new piece on the KP3 students during an intensive rehearsal week, which was then performed in the spring KP3 concert. Wilkins also co-facilitated two community conversations with Dr. Manuel Montoya, Associate professor of global structures and international management at the University of New Mexico Anderson School of Management.

Leslie Parker Dance Project (Minneapolis, MN / Brooklyn, NY) made her first visit to Keshet in May, beginning her community connectivity endeavors via her award-winning project Call to Remember. She led public workshops on black dance improvisation for beginner and advanced dancers and gave an artist talk co-facilitated by Dr. Manuel Montoya.

These presentations by Everett, Helanius J. Wilkins, and Leslie Parker were made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.
Hear Here Festival
Keshet was thrilled to welcome the return of the Hear Here Festival in collaboration with the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Arts and Culture. Similar to the concept of the 48-hour Film Festival, the Hear Here Festival provides a platform for artists to conceive, develop, and present new works within a concentrated period of time.
Musicians, poets, choreographers, and interdisciplinary artists were paired together “blindly,” meaning creative partners were unknown until the two-week creation process began. Participating artists were provided with rehearsal and performance space, and access to arts business workshops through a pre- and post-festival series. Each artist receives a $1,000 stipend to support their participation in the Festival experience. The return of the Hear Here Festival heralded world premieres of 4 new works by 8 artists in a one-night-only event. Original works included live poetry, music, aerials/silks, and of course, dance!Photos by Pat Berrett
The Albuquerque Hear Here Festival draws inspiration from the original Hear Here! Festival, which premiered in Minneapolis, MN in 2015. Founded by choreographer Maggie Bergeron and composer Nicholas Gaudette, the festival showcases the collaborative spirit of live music and movement.
Makers Space Experience
Keshet welcomed 24 residency artists and collaborators through two cohorts of the Makers Space Experience in spring of 2024. The Makers Space Experience is a transformative 10-day residency program that offers choreographers, dancemakers, and movement-based multidisciplinary artists:
- Dedicated studio space
- Collaborative movement classes
- Practical arts business workshops
- Housing in Albuquerque for the residency period
- Immersion in New Mexico’s vibrant artistic community
This year, Makers offered a variety of peer-led classes for each Cohort, and our local Albuquerque dance community. Makers exchanged ideas with classes such as Spinal Articulation by Parisha Rajbhandari or Creative Choreography with Anna Pillot and Caroline Butcher. Each Maker shared approaches to creating and experiencing movement. While some were focused on the internal sensation of the movement in the body, others accentuated the importance of joy and play in the process.
Photos by Pat Berrett
We also had Makers that shared directly from their repertory, teaching choreography they had recently created, or had been working on with their company. Local, national, and international artists gathered in each cohort sharing the space and germinating new ideas and relationships!

In FY23-24, Keshet saw 33 visiting artists from 15 locations – 8 states and 3 countries! Scroll around the map below to explore where everyone visited from!
KIIC Funding
Keshet is grateful to the many funders who have invested in this important programming, championing the value of the arts, the artists, and the arts economy, and the intersection of arts practice and difficult conversations about critical contemporary issues.
We acknowledge the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the New Mexico Humanities Council, the New England Foundation for the Arts and the National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Mellon Foundation and the Doris Duke Charitable Fund, the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Arts and Culture, the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund, and the PNC Foundation.
Arts & Justice Initiatives
Through Keshet’s Arts & Justice Initiatives, this year we continued connecting locally and nationally to support systems change that centers the arts and empowers young people.
Movement + Mentorship = Metamorphosis (M3)
This year, Keshet’s M3 (Movement + Mentorship = Metamorphosis) programming continued engaging youth in New Mexico juvenile justice facilities. With programming active in the Youth Diagnostic and Development Center (YDDC) in Albuquerque, as well as the John Paul Taylor Center (JPTC) in Las Cruces, Keshet faculty provided programming to every adjudicated youth in the state of New Mexico.
PREA-specific programming culminated at the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center (YSC) in September 2023. Keshet conducted 135 classes at YSC, familiarizing residents with PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) concepts, taught through creative expression. As an evidence based practice, Keshet provided programming for residents in each unit at YSC, utilizing dance, mindfulness, creative arts, exercise, and meditation to define boundaries and develop coping mechanisms for safety of self and others, as related to PREA standards.
Community Conversations
Members of Keshet’s staff developed a new Community Conversation, called Diverting from Detention: Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline. As part of Keshet’s focus on alternatives to youth detention, staff researched and developed this Community Conversation to look at the history, structure, and fuel of the school to prison pipeline and engaged local educators in discussion on useful tools, resources, and practices for supporting students at risk of falling through the cracks of systems.
Presenting: Aspen in Aspen, Columbia Justice Lab in Santa Fe, Aspen in Boston
This year, Keshet Arts and Justice staff traveled across the country to attend and present in conferences focused on social justice work.
In October 2023, Arts and Justice staff traveled to Aspen, Colorado for the Aspen Institute’s Opportunity Youth Forum Convening, to learn and share about youth-focused justice work happening in communities across the United States. In May 2024, Keshet staff reconvened with the Aspen community in Boston, Massachusetts to lead a workshop about our practice of using art to transform social and juvenile justice spaces.
Keshet was also invited to join a small gathering in April 2024: the Collaborative on Reckoning and Justice, a foundational aspect of the Square One Project at Columbia University’s Justice Lab. The Collaborative gathered in Santa Fe, where Keshet Dance Company and Arts and Justice staff members performed segments from iterations of Movement for Mercy and shared more about Keshet’s history of using art for change in systems reform.

AJI Funding
Keshet is grateful to the many funders who have invested in this important programming, supporting the impact of the arts on the juvenile justice system and the value of community conversation and connection.
We acknowledge the Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc, the Sheila Fortune Foundation, The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and the Meow Wolf Foundation.
Education & Engagement
Keshet continues to offer dance education and performance opportunities for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, removing barriers to dance through our sliding scale pricing for classes and tickets. By offering access to dance with reduced and no cost options, Keshet ensures that those who may not otherwise have access, can join us in the celebration of dance.

KP3
Keshet’s Pre-Professional Program (KP3) enjoyed increased national connection this year, participating in creative exchange with Keshet’s residency artists and a special experience with American Ballet Theater (ABT)!
In March, upper level KP3 students ages 12 to 18 went to the Lensic in Santa Fe to attend an education lecture-demonstration performed by the ABT Studio Company. This performance was followed by a ballet master class taught by the Artistic Director of ABT’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, Stella Abrera.
Information given in the lecture-demonstration directly correlated to curriculum covered by students’ in their daily training, ranging from the seven movements of ballet as outlined by Jean Georges Noverre, to a demonstration of student-created choreography similar to choreographic exercises Keshet students encounter in their own training. All students who took the master class train regularly in ABT’s National Training Curriculum, as one of Keshet’s teachers has been certified in pre-primary through Level 5 of this curriculum. The class presented strong reinforcement of concepts students regularly encounter coupled with an opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills to a respected artist in the field. For some students, it was their first ballet masterclass experience. The masterclass allowed students to push themselves outside of their comfort zones. All students have reported that they gained a great deal of information from the masterclass that continues to be useful in their daily training.
Then, Keshet returned to the Lensic with 20 students ages 9 to 18 to watch the ABT Studio Company perform. The Lensic generously provided each student with a ticket to see the performance free of charge. For a good number of students, this was their first opportunity to see a live ballet performance. The company performed a range of ballet, from Classical to more Contemporary works. The thrill of viewing live performance energized Keshet students, allowing them to deepen their understanding of the art of ballet. Students witnessed concepts performed on stage that directly relate to their daily education, building a deeper understanding of where their training could take them if they continue to invest themselves in their studies.
Throughout the year KP3 students received mentoring from faculty and Company members through classes and rehearsals, and they practiced mentorship at the Little Dancer Big Dancer Mentorship Breakfast. Families brought their little ones to a free dance class on a Saturday morning in March, and each little dancer was greeted by/took class with KP3 mentors. Families and students enjoyed delicious donated breakfast treats together! This event launched Keshet’s Spring Scholarship Fund campaign, which supports unlimited, noncompetitive scholarships through the sliding scale payment system for all classes and performances. KP3 students practiced their mentorship skills as fabulous hosts welcoming our young students and supporting them through classes!
In April, KP3 students joined the Keshet Company Dancers for National Water Dance, engaging in a unique site-specific work titled Moving Forward Together.
The students were able to rehearse on-site at the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park each week! We had many parent volunteers help us carpool students to the Rio Grande Nature Center. The show was beautiful and choreographed by both Lara Segura and Anastasia Knodle. It included all of the KP3ers and the Company.
The culmination of KP3 studies included the 17th Annual KP3 concert, Going on 17, featuring 15 pieces from a range of styles, including contemporary, ballet, jazz, and improvisation. The KP3 concert also included the performance of a very special piece choreographed by Presenting Voices artist Helanius J. Wilkins especially for our KP3 students! Photos by Laura Orozco Garrett and Anastasia Knodle
Return of School Matinees
This year, Keshet was able to offer free school matinees for the first time since the pandemic! Over 200 students from 6 school groups came to Keshet in November for special school day performances of Anemoia, a new, original production, choreographed by members of the Keshet Dance Company and Artistic Director Shira Greenberg, and including Keshet’s Pre-Professional Students and a multigenerational mix of dancers and movers from the Albuquerque community. Teachers received a Curriculum Guidebook and students got to ask their questions directly to the choreographers and performers in a post-show Q&A session designed to help our youngest audience members learn more about dance performance!
Outdoor Classes
With support from the Outdoor Recreation Division, we partnered with our neighbor 21st Century Public Academy to provide dance-based community programming for youth throughout Albuquerque, combining the joy of outdoor exploration with arts programming.
This summer we offered 2 Outdoor Site Specific Dance Making classes, and during the Spring 2024 semester, supported 2 field trips with 21st Century Public Academy using dance as a tool to support their middle school environmental science curriculum, while providing a site-specific dance experience. Intersecting “site specific” dance education with outdoor recreational engagement, and the added benefits of hands on learning opportunities for middle schoolers, this project connects students with creative learning, landscape engagement, water resource conversations, and the opportunity to engage in outdoor performances simultaneously with thousands of other outdoor learners/artists across the United States.

Sliding Scale Tickets and Classes
Keshet’s scholarship program has grown over the years to offer sliding scale payment options for tickets to performances, as well as class registration. This means that students and their families can choose what they pay for classes and performances, including $0 options to remove any economic barriers to participation in our dance community. Students are also supported through our Costume Shop so that performing in dance concerts does not add any economic strain to families. This year 62% of our student body utilized sliding scale payment options and 74.5% of tickets were sold using the sliding scale payment system.
Education Funding
Keshet is grateful to the many funders who have invested in dance education and performance, helping Keshet to continue broadening community accessibility to experience the transformative art of dance.
We acknowledge New Mexico Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division, and the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Art and Culture.
Keshet Center for the Arts
Keshet continued planning for our big renovation project, supported by a $1.2 million dollar grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. In 2023, through a competitive open RFP process, Dreskin Architecture + Innovation was selected for the project. This year, through a collaborative process including Dreskin and Keshet team members, schematic designs were completed to best meet programming needs through the renovations process. This coming year, we will have another competitive open RFP process to select the contractor and begin construction!
Volunteers
Our community thrives with the support of our volunteers! This year 162 volunteers provided over 2,900 hours of time, helping out at Keshet events, offering their expertise in unique fields in arts business workshops, and helping build a new sprung floor at Keshet Center for the Arts!
In a demonstration of shared values and commitment to the arts, Rotary Del Norte and Rotary International donated $9,000 to construct a new sprung floor at Keshet Dance and Center for the Arts. Our community matched that support both in donations to Keshet’s Scholarship Fund to support students dancing on the new floor AND by coming together with Rotary volunteers to help build the new sprung floor! Over 20 volunteers from Rotary and Keshet came together for a special day in April to lend their time and expertise to the construction of this new sprung floor in Studio 2! Now ALL of Keshet’s studios have sprung floors, a structural and safety standard for dance floors everywhere that provides a safer and more comfortable space for Keshet’s students, dance company and guest artists to train and rehearse. Photos by Evening Star Barron
We also had volunteers keeping Keshet going throughout the year, including our pre-professional (KP3) students and their families. 62 KP3 volunteers donated over 1,000 hours working in the lobby and backstage for Keshet performances, assisting in dance classes, and helping during community clean up days. We are so grateful to our KP3 families for all the ways they work to represent Keshet and the work we do.
One unique community volunteer donated 50 hours as a Greeter on Saturday mornings at Keshet, choosing Keshet the beneficiary to complete her Senior Volunteer Project at Amy Biehl High School! We loved having her!
We are grateful to all of our volunteers – from students and families, to school and business groups, to our amazing Board and Committee members – for your meaningful support of Keshet staff and community!

With the support and generosity of our sponsors, donors, committee members, board members, volunteers, and staff, we raised over $100,000 (net) for Keshet’s Youth Arts Initiatives!
The ABQ Wine Classic included four VIP events, hosted and supported by our 2024 Honorary Winery Ramey Wine Cellars, Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Farm, and Hotel Andaluz. We kicked off the weeked with a reception in the beautiful Library Bar and had dinner outside La Quinta as dusk settled. Friday night saw an exclusive Champagne Gala dinner at a private home in Albuquerque and a special performance by Keshet KP3 students. Hotel Andaluz was our gracious host for our Saturday night Dinner and Live Auction, which included a sparkling reception and silent auction before dinner. Sunday afternoon concluded the whirlwind weekend of wine, philanthropy, and connection with a delicious BBQ at a private Albuquerque home catered by Chef Louis Moskow from Restaurant 315 & Wine Bar in Santa Fe and a special performance by Keshet KP3 students and Company Dancers
